olume Reduction in Prefrontal Gray Matter in nsuccessful Criminal Psychopaths

چکیده
ackground: Although studies of neurologic patients have suggested that prefrontal structural impairments may predispose to ociopathy, it is unknown whether there is a relationship between psychopathy and prefrontal volume in individuals from the ommunity and whether any prefrontal structural impairment is specific to “unsuccessful” (caught) psychopaths as opposed to successful” (uncaught) psychopaths. This study tests the hypothesis that psychopathy is associated with a reduction in prefrontal gray olume but that this abnormality is specific to unsuccessful psychopaths. ethod: Prefrontal gray and white matter volumes were assessed using structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 16 nsuccessful psychopaths, 13 successful psychopaths, and 23 control subjects. esults: Higher total as well as subfactor psychopathy scores (arrogant/deceptive, affective, and impulsive/unstable) were all ssociated with low prefrontal gray volume. Unsuccessful psychopaths, but not successful psychopaths, had a 22.3% reduction in refrontal gray matter volume compared with control subjects. onclusions: These results demonstrating for the first time a prefrontal structural deficit in community psychopaths provide partial upport for a prefrontal theory of psychopathy but highlight an important difference between successful and unsuccessful psychopaths.

Morphological alterations in the prefrontal cortex and the amygdala in unsuccessful psychopaths.
Although deficits in several cortical and subcortical structures have been found in psychopaths, it remains unclear whether the neuropathology differs between subgroups of psychopaths (i.e., unsuccessful and successful). Using both traditional and novel image analyses methods, this study aims to reveal gross and subtle morphological changes in the prefrontal cortex and the amygdala in unsuccess...
متن کاملBrain Structural Correlates of Emotion Recognition in Psychopaths
Individuals with psychopathy present deficits in the recognition of facial emotional expressions. However, the nature and extent of these alterations are not fully understood. Furthermore, available data on the functional neural correlates of emotional face recognition deficits in adult psychopaths have provided mixed results. In this context, emotional face morphing tasks may be suitable for c...

ackground: Structural abnormalities in prefrontal and cingulate gyrus regions—important in affective processing, impulse control nd cognition may contribute to the psychopathology of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Previous MRI studies examining olume have reported that compared with healthy controls, BPD patients have decreases in right anterior cingulate, no differences in orsolateral ...
متن کاملAberrant social and cerebral responding in a competitive reaction time paradigm in criminal psychopaths
In a previous study (Lotze et al., 2007) we described dorsal medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) activation in healthy subjects during retaliation in a competitive reaction time task. Interestingly, the less callous the subjects were, the more they responded with ventral mPFC-activation when watching the opponent suffering. In this study we used this paradigm to investigate behavioral and neural re...
متن کاملDeficient fear conditioning in psychopathy: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study.
CONTEXT Psychopaths belong to a larger group of persons with antisocial personality disorder and are characterized by an inability to have emotional involvement and by the repeated violation of the rights of others. It was hypothesized that this behavior might be the consequence of deficient fear conditioning. OBJECTIVE To study the cerebral, peripheral, and subjective correlates of fear cond...
